The Power of Silence: How it Can Bring You Peace
Where Do You Go When the World Gets Too Loud? Inside.
I spent a large part of yesterday deep-cleaning my house. The world had piled on top of all my tasks, and the week prior, I found myself too busy to be at home for more than the requisite sleep and meals. When I finally looked at the mountain of dishes and laundry, I felt so... meh. Deep cleaning my space helped me create a mindful environment for stillness and meditation that I needed to reconnect with.
In the midst of my busy life—answering the endless demands of work, responsibilities, and commitments—I had forgotten to include myself in the equation. So, I took a step back, canceled a few appointments, and deep-cleaned my space. And it felt great.
Creating a Space for Mindfulness
I noticed that immediately after there was a calm that I felt when I moved through this now clean version of my home. Objects carry memories, and whether we realize it or not, walking through cluttered spaces scatters our focus and attention in disconnected micro-moments. The stillness we so desperately need—yet often run from—can be found in the spaces these objects occupy. Decluttering is more than just cleaning; it's a powerful form of self-care that promotes mental clarity
I am finding that to regulate myself emotionally I need the neutrality that silence can offer. It allows me to move gracefully into the part of myself that responds versus reacts.
While cleaning, I folded a meditation blanket that had suffered my lack of attention. Looking around as I held the delicate fibers in my arms, I realized I was surrounded by my plants and a gentle vista of a setting sun. This was my new spot. I chose right there to honor this as a place to sit and invite silence; to come home to myself—and set up a renewed meditation practice. To intentionally choose silence and a place where that silence would be honored was an act of honoring myself.
The Benefits of Silence and Stillness
I don’t know if you will read this far down my blog, but if you do, you may be fascinated by a small fact I learned today: there are seven proven ways to capture attention in life. One of them is to be scary. Another is to be sexy. What I notice in today’s circus of information is that so much of it is intentionally terrifying—designed to keep our attention hooked, and it is working for a large part of us. (Have you read my post about being overwhelmed and why its not your fault?)
Recently, I was in took a short trip. Despite the alarming news I had heard about the place where I was visiting, my experience there was peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. Proving once again that when we turn away from the noise for a while, we get to see the beauty that is often around us, waiting to be discovered in the quiet of our lives.
In pockets of silence, we find wisdom, peace, and the power to process our lives. Cultivating silence is one of the greatest forms of self-love. The ability to simply be in stillness, even for three, five, or ten minutes, can change everything and offer clarity.
If silence offers us clarity in the world around us, imagine what is waiting to be discovered in the world within us.
